The black screen seems ominous - analog(video) board failure? There is a video connector hidden behind the back panel to which an external Apple monitor can be plugged in. If he gets normal video thru it, that will confirm my suspicion. If the Firmware update was corrupted he should get to a grey screen with a notice that the firmware needs updating so he can try again.
