I have...many times.  First thing to do is look to see if his iMac has the
optional db-15 video connector on the back inside the case.  If so connect a
monitor to that and see what is displayed.  He may be able to rewrite the
firmware if he gets video from that port.  There are about 10 other things
to do, but I don't have time to type them right now.  The absolute worst
case scenario is to yank the logic board, put it into another iMac of the
same type and then upgrade the firmware then replace it into the original
machine.  It is in no way your friends fault.  I am an Apple Service Tech
for a living and every once in a while one of them does it to me too.
Happened just last week.
