If he tried to install 10.2 over 8.6 without doing the firmware update he
will lose video, but the hardware will still be fine.  I have seen a ton of
iMacs where the person "swore" that their analog board was bad.  They were
always amazed when I was able to fix it without replacing the PS or Analog
board.
