bad form and all, replying to myself... i got pulled away before 
finishing this, and sent it without proofing when i got back. :P

basically, i think kids are just rough on mice. as the age of the 
typical users goes up, the incidence of this issue on any given type of 
mouse goes down considerably. it was widespread at the K12 district i 
was at, fairly rare yet not uncommon at the university, and almost 
nonexistent at the ad agency.

today, when i see this issue, it's either a kid coming in with the 
mouse, or a parent coming in and blaming the kid.
