Actions in Mail like deleting a message, have slowed down a step or two. Instead of deleting and loading a new message in a beat, it takes 2 or 2.5 beats. I have not changed anything recently and have restarted the iMac and Mail. Could I have too many messages saved? Does that effect speed in Mail?
These are almost impossible questions to answer without more details than you want to type. However, there are some general housekeeping things you can look at. Depending on how long the systems been in use, you may have a just a condition of built up extraneous crud over time?

Consider a utility like Mac Janitor or Cocktail (both freeware) to run the Unix cron jobs that occur automatically on machines that are on 24 x 7, also use Apple's on disc utility to repair permissions, then reboot and see if things are not improved?

If those steps make no difference then look at something like Jaguar Cache Cleaner (shareware) and run it's cache cleaning scripts. There's no way a 17" FP iMac should have a HD capacity issue this early, unless you have hordes of video files, etc.. Certainly a nearly full HD will slow things down drastically. Memory is always a consideration depending on how many applications you have installed. Some app's are notorious memory hogs.

Think simple on a Mac that new, the odds are it's just system sludge.
