Mail is Now a step slower

Actions in Mail like deleting a message, have slowed down a step or 
two.  Instead of deleting and loading a new message in a beat, it takes 
2 or 2.5 beats.  I have not changed anything recently and have 
restarted the iMac and Mail.  Could I have too many messages saved?  
Does that effect speed in Mail?
