I bet it's possible--what about ESD? I bet if you happen to be unlucky enough to ground yourself via the phone port (and remember that throwing an inch-long spark isn't unheard of) you could cook some little solid-state gizmo. If the modem doesn't answer the phone (so to speak), the simplest explanation is it's no good. Considering a USB modem is $50, it's sure the cheapest fix (unless one of us suddenly does it through sheer brilliance).
