Thanks

"Best way" is a value judgement, of course; however, an easy way that comes to my mind is this: Buy an external firewire drive (with enclosure). Use "CarbonCopyCloner" (share/freeware; download from versiontracker.com) to copy everything over to the new drive. Then swap mechanisms. You end up with a bigger HD in your iMac, plus a smaller pseudo-portable HD for whatever. You could even just erase it and sell it on ebay or the swaplist for a few bucks.

While this might seem extravagant, consider that it will be both fast and easy. And not particularly expensive, if you shop around. For example, if you go to www.pcmicrostore.com and check out the "HardDrive--IDE" section in their "product finder", you will see many mechanisms that include a firewire enclosure, for little additional cost (typically sold separately for $50-80). Some examples:
Item HD-IBM120-ME320F. 120 GB IBM 7200 in FW case for $139.
Item HD-MA120-ME320F. 120 GB Maxtor 7200 in FW case for $145.
Item HD-WD120-ME720F. 120 GB WesternDigital 7200 in FW case for $145.
Item HD-IBM80-ME320F. 80 GB IBM 7200 in FW case for $117.
Item HD-MA60-ME720F. 60 GB Maxtor 7200 in FW case for $115.

Some of these firewire cases support 5.25" devices (the ME320 style) and might be useful if you wanted to build a firewire CD-RW drive, for example, instead of using the old HD from your iMac.

PC Microstore is one of the few vendors who will ship by USPS, to my PO Box. Yay.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!
