Hurrah! (restrained elation). Our "new" cableco, that bought out the old
one, just installed new cable on our street, which presumably will let
them offer 2-way cable modems rather than the heretofore unsatisfactory 1-way.
I of course would like to get that service, esp. now that I've
installed an airport card in our flatpanel iMac (to connect dialup to my
floating ibook).

HOWEVER, I have some questions. The television with cable connect is on
the first floor. Our home office is on the 3rd. If the cable modem goes
down where the tv is, won't that make connectivity suffer?
I don't know if there's an option for them to run the cable upstairs
(on the outside of the house possibly?) and connect the modem up here.
If they do that, will the airport card connect automatically to the
modem or do I need to use an ethernet cable?

Oil strikes created boom townscrowded with people who hoped to get rich
on black gold. The land was flat as a pancake, but the oil derricks
that rose up every fifty feet made it look like a metal forest..This
created a state of mind, that people could get-rich-quick. They could
also go-broke-quick. Ruin and poverty overtook some of the biggest
millionaires. Read OKLAHOMA, an Enslow book, by Donald Henry Hinkle.
