HOWEVER, I have some questions. The television with cable connect is on
the first floor. Our home office is on the 3rd. If the cable modem goes
down where the tv is, won't that make connectivity suffer?
The cable modem will not go down where the TV is, that would be stupid. The cable modem has visual info lights on it to alert you of problems. It will be placed near the computer.
The cable company will provide a splitter and a length of cable (and probably drill some holes or go outside the house) to get a coax line up to your floor. While I'm sure it will be longer than mine, my cable modem setup is in my office, completely across the house from where the cable comes into the house. I have two 50-foot coax rolls (the first to get from the entry point to my office, the second to go to the back bedroom) and neither has even the slightest amount of diminished signal.
If they do that, will the airport card connect automatically to the modem or do I need to use an ethernet cable?
I don't really understand this question. The coax cables comes into your house and is split by a splitter. One lines goes to your cable controller box, the other goes up to the 3rd floor and attached to your cable modem. From the cable modem, a short bit of Ethernet cord connects to your Airport base station or the computer that will serve as a Software Base Station. From that point, other wireless devices can pick up the Net in your home.
