HOWEVER, I have some questions. The television with cable connect is on
the first floor. Our home office is on the 3rd. If the cable modem goes
down where the tv is, won't that make connectivity suffer?
I don't know if there's an option for them to run the cable upstairs
(on the outside of the house possibly?) and connect the modem up here.
If they do that, will the airport card connect automatically to the
modem or do I need to use an ethernet cable?
Your cable modem isn't really connected to your TV cable at all...just from the same company! Your cable modem for the computer will come in on a cable that looks like the other, but it can be installed anywhere. It may have to be run up a wall outside and run through the outside, or up an inside wall or whatever, but it would be just like installing a TV (cable) in a different place.
I don't know about the airport and cord but you can have the cable modem where ever it is convenient.
in some cases, rather than running a new cable into the house, the cable company may want to just use an RF splitter on the existing line. while there's nothing technically wrong with this - it won't degrade your TV signal nor your internet signal so long as they use a decent splitter - it's preferable to you to have a new line run for the convenience of having your modem closer to your computers. they ran mine up the brick on the outside of my townhouse and into the spare bedroom, then a third into the upstairs bedroom (gotta have TV in the bedroom, ya know).
