Thanks to everyone who replied. Too many for individual replies, but I've saved them all and find them very helpful to me in understanding what exactly is going to happen here, IF I pay whatever exorbitant charge the cableco is gonna ask for 2-way connection. Actually, that's another question: what do YOU (and you and you) pay for that service?
I pay $45/month for RoadRunner service, and it's worth every penny (though I of course would prefer it to be cheaper). Incredibly reliable (two short outages in four years!), fast (400K/sec at night, 300K/sec day, uploads seem to be at least half that) and trouble-free. I pity my friends around here who have Sprint DSL.
