So, Chris, (or anyone)... question:

Do you know if positioning the computer beside an air conditioner (inserted in a window, I believe) can cause gaussing?

I'm trying to help an iMac user on another list who reports that her monitor has faint evenly spaced grey lines visible, along with yellowing on the side of the screen adjacent to the AC unit.

I've suggested powering on (after a decent interval) to degauss, and plugging in to an outlet separate from the AC, but I don't even know that an air conditioner can cause this kinda video abnormality. Do > you?

Heavy Duty electric motors do cause a lot of Magnetic interference. The fridge at work makes my bosses speakers pop when the motor kicks in and it's a good. 8 ft from his desk! I have also noticed some cheaper stereo hi-fi ssytems crackle when using a vacuum cleaner.

Do the lines on the screen move or ripple in time with the 'hum' of the aircon? if so move that Mac.

As for questions from others about Magnetic distortions, if you find you are getting then move the iMac or CRT *immediately* as long-term exposure to adverse magnetics can permanently discolor the screen. getting rid of the effects is easy if your scree has a 'degause' function. Having an LCD G4 iMac, I don't know if it degauses the CRT on power-on (should let out a loud <thud> noise as the magnetics kick over). I know I have had magnetic distortion problems on CRTS and on compact macs (which definitely DON'T have a degauss), most of which have been related to bad hi-fi speaker placement.
