I am in the process of upgrading the memory in my friend's Rev C slot-loading Imac. I installed 256M each in the upper and lower slots, in the proper physical size.

Where did the RAM come from? Reputable dealer who knew what machine it was going into?

The machine does not start. No chime but a short tone. I can hear the disk spinning a bit and the fan. No activity at all on the monitor.

"Tone"? One "beep" is supposed to indicate "no RAM". Two beeps - incompatible RAM.

Did I fry my friend's Mac?

Not necessarily. Test to see if it works with original RAM? Then test with one new 256 module at a time. 256s have to be just the right spec to work in that model.
