I have heard that some iMacs don't like these. Is there a particular slot that is more sensitive than another? Does the one beep mean that all RAM has been checked and NONE of it seems to be installed? Would you infer from the fact that the test is occurring that the CPU is seated and working?
Try putting the original RAM in the bottom slot and the new RAM in the top.
The bottom slot, IIRC, had slightly different requirements.
