I'm sending this to the guys at TechTV, and to the nerdy people I'm related to. I figure one of you should be able to answer my question, and hopefully get this question on the Screen Savers or Call for Help. My question would get some air time and that would be cool.
Here it goes: I'm trying to install GIMP on OS X but I'm a little confused. I have OS X 10.2.1 Jaguar right now and wanna install the latest version of GIMP.
In a nutshell, Shannon -- no you don't.
What you really want is GraphicConverter.
Let me explain.
GIMP is a neat program, but it is a UNIX-based program. In order to run it on your Mac, you are going to have to load, run and learn and ENTIRELY NEW OPERATING SYSTEM called X-Windows (or X11, as Apple's version of it is called). X11 runs alongside Mac OS X, but is separate from it.
X11 is NOT a Mac-like operating system. It is a GUI slapped onto UNIX. This sort of thing is fun for the uber-nerds, but (for the most part) confusing HELL for "normal" Mac users.
I'm certainly not trying to imply that you shouldn't explore X-Windows and/or X11 if you want to. For some people, learning that kind of stuff is fun.
I get the impression, however, that what you REALLY want to do is use a graphic program, and learning/installing/running X11 in order to compile/install/run GIMP is like learning to fly a Harrier Jet in order to go to the corner store.
I run X11 and OpenOffice.org once in a while. It's nice to be able to do it, but truth be told the whole X11 world is so UGLY and the user interface so UN-MAC-LIKE that I rarely fool with it.
Give GraphicConverter a try, or perhaps Photoshop Elements. If I assume correctly that the point of this exercise is to actually edit/manipulate some graphics, you'll accomplish that goal FAR faster using one of those tools than you will expending the effort to compile/run/learn X11, fink and GIMP.
On of the documents I saw said to go to the terminal and type "sudo deslect". I went to "U"pdate packages, then "S"elect packages and installed all the packages needed for GIMP. What I'm downloading and what I do afterward is a mystery. I'm working on a phone line with a 26k connection. The packages total 64.9MB so this will take awhile over night.
Sorry if this email sounds kinda vague and confusing. I'm just very confused.
This is why I take exception to people like Leo who deliberately mislead "normal" people into thinking this kind of thing is easy to do. It isn't.

"With the introduction of the new iTunes Music Store, we've now built the first real complete ecosystem for the digital music age. We've got a way to buy music online legally that's fantastic -- it's better than any other way to acquire music. We've got a way manage music with the iTunes Jukebox, which is the best in the world. And we've got a way to listen to music on the go with the iPod, which is the most popular MP3 player in the world and one of the coolest things in the world. So we've really got, from one end to another, a complete solution for digital music. We're the only people in the world to do this, so we feel great about it." -- Steve Jobs, Time Magazine, 30-April-03
