GIMP is a neat program, but it is a UNIX-based program. In order to run it on your Mac, you are going to have to load, run and learn and ENTIRELY NEW OPERATING SYSTEM called X-Windows (or X11, as Apple's version of it is called). X11 runs alongside Mac OS X, but is separate from it.

X11 is NOT a Mac-like operating system. It is a GUI slapped onto UNIX. This sort of thing is fun for the uber-nerds, but (for the most part) confusing HELL for "normal" Mac users.

X is *not* an operating system. It is not a GUI. It is a windowing system. You build GUIs on top of it. The GIMP's GUI, for instance. While the underlying interface is nasty, X encourages a number of good things including a large measure of user choice about the way their GUI works. Of course, no one sees the underlying interface except people that program to it, and even they usually use some kind of toolbox thingus to avoid staring it in the face.

The reason it is called "X11" is that it superceded "X10" some time
ago. I installed Apple's version of X *and it just worked*. Prior
to a version being available from Apple, you did have to know something
to get it working. In fact, I never managed to do so to my satisfaction,
but this version works fine.

I don't get this sudden "gee, you have to be a GEEK to use that" crap
showing up on this list. Maybe someone can suggest a good therapy
program that runs on OS X.
