You are correct. I am guilty of oversimplifying. Try explaining that in detail to most people and watch their eyes glaze over. X is a *doorway* to another (non-Mac-like) operating system, one that 99% of Mac people will have little desire to ever fool with.
I installed Apple's version of X *and it just worked*.
I did too ... but until I figured out fink and quite a number of terminal commands, there wasn't a heck of a lot I could do with it. Even now, I only use it for OpenOffice and (occasionally) the GIMP. Most of the rest of what's on offer for X11 isn't of much interest to non-geeks.
I don't get this sudden "gee, you have to be a GEEK to use that" crap showing up on this list. Maybe someone can suggest a good therapy program that runs on OS X.
You don't have to be a geek to download it, or run it I suppose. But to do anything USEFUL with it (which is, in the absence of games or porn viewers for X, the only other thing people would want to do with it), you DO need to be a geek. That's all I'm sayin'.
