Every so often being a "megageek" sounds kinda interesting. I'm having
another resurgence in that area right now. However, I'm going to put
that project on the back burner right now until I get some other stuff
done and become a little more knowledgeable in that area. I don't
wanna dig myself into a hole.

Let me put it this way: I know of *no* jobs in the print industries that require (or even care about) a working knowledge of the GIMP.

If you want to get jobs in the graphics arts community, focus on Adobe Products and Quark Xpress. Maybe some Dreamweaver and Freehand would be good, but really 90% of the professional print industry is focused on Adobe and Quark.

If you want to expand beyond graphic design & layout, I'd suggest studying "traditional" print/publishing stuff and becoming an Illustrator, Writer, or Photographer (if you have talent in that area) or an Art Director (if you don't). <insert rimshot here!>

If you want to move beyond print and into web stuff, there are two almost-totally separate aspects to that industry, called "front-end" and "back-end." Front-end is where print/graphic people generally go, designing and animating and laying out and that sort of thing. It's hard work and very frustrating, because the landscape changes like quicksand, the tools are constantly evolving, and the money's not that great -- but the chicks love it.

The "back end" is where the real money is. Scripting languages like PHP, CGI, Perl, Python, ASP etc., database programming like SQL, "web app" programming like Java and SOAP, and the tools that link all that boring stuff to the "front end" stuff and turn it into dynamic, powerful sites capable of generating millions of dollars (WebObjects, ColdFusion) et al -- if you can stand the geekiness, that's where the bucks and power (but no chicks*) are.

Just my .02 Euros.

PS. Just in case any female readers misunderstand me -- I don't mean to imply that women can't do these jobs. Of course they can. I meant you don't get "babes" doing that sort of work. :)
