I have a 10 gig internal drive and a 80 gig external. The internal is going
bad I think, so I need to replace it. What is the maximum gigs that a Mac
can recognize?
Depends. For a Mac that had a 10GB internal the max is going to be 128GB (or 137Gb as the HD insdustry falsely calls it)
And is this per device, or total of all drives?
Per device.
I have a 400 slot loader.
I'm not sure, but a 7200rpm drive might be a bit warm for a older iMac, so you might want to check the heat. If you can find a newer 120GB 7200 with a 8MB cache though, I know those drives are fairly cool (cooler than my 80GB 5400) as I have two in my G4.
