I have a 10 gig internal drive and a 80 gig external. The internal is going
bad I think, so I need to replace it. What is the maximum gigs that a Mac
can recognize?

YOUR Mac can recognise up to 128 GB per drive (actually 137, I think, but that's unformatted).

This is a common is misconception (I hear the morons on The Screen Savers repeat it all the time). The capacity of HDs is measured by computers in 1 Gigabyte = 1024*1204*1204 bytes, or 1,073,741,824 bytes. Hard drive VENDORS, on the other hand, list drives as being 1 Gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes:

128 * (1,073,741,824) = 137,438,953,472

There is no space "lost" to formatting (well, a very little but, but not 9GB).

Also, I have seen posts about certain drives don't work well as an internal
drive. I need to know which ones work well.

I have a 400 slot loader.

I have put a Western Digital SE 8MB 7200 120GB in my iMac slot-loader (as a replacement for the original hitachi 5400 60GB) and it works fine. No heat problems or anything. I don't think you need to worry about that at all.

In my experience drives with 8MB cache are considerably cooler than 2MB cache drives.
