Hi,
I have an iMac G4 (1.0Ghz) with SuperDrive. I have have (used) 46.33Gb of it!
I can at least half-heartedly try and say you'd be best off buying a FireWire 3.5" enclosure. I know you're in the UK (you can't escape you know!! :) ) thus I can recommend you take a look at <http://www.modecomputing.com> who stock a wide range of such enclosures at thoroughly decent prices. It's a shame you didn't attend the Apple Expo in Paris actually- there was a firm there called MacWay (based in Strasbourg) who were selling really good enclosures.
I don't recall the initial 1GHz iMac having USB 2.0 however it's on the new board rather than the old one so it might. From what i can see nothing seems to list that model as having USB 2.0. ASP might tell you but I'm pretty sure the answer is no.
One thing I can say is don't trade it in, like buying a car you'll get done over if you trade in when buying new.
