I just bought a new Mac (an ibook, actually, but I still have my iMac) and it came with OX 10.2.4 and some flavor of 9. My iMac still has 8.6 on it, so this is my first experience with X and I love it!
Anyway, I've been trying to fax using the OS X fax program.
What am I doing wrong? What should I have tried that I didn't think of?

It's probably not you. It's probably the FaxSTF program. It stinks.
Though I have to ask, because you wouldn't believe the number of people who don't know this: you DO have a telephone line plugged into your machine, right? (People on broadband often think that they can fax this way w/o a phone line plugged in)
If you do, then you have three options:
1. Spend $10 and buy Cocoa eFax (available from macupdate.com or versiontracker.com). I've had great results with this little program, works perfectly.
2. Spend $30 on Page Sender, which I've heard lots of nice things about and is probably more advanced than Cocoa eFax. Depends on your needs, I guess (mine are basic sending/receiving).
3. Wait for Panther (10.3, which will probably come out later this month), which has built-in and WORKING fax software as part of the OS -- it's just like printing.
