Hi all I am PC user - Windoes/FreeBSD/Linux (occassional). Before I take the jump and buy a new iMac, I want to buy a used iMac and check whether I like it. is it possible to install & run OS X on a 233MHz , 96 MB, 4.2 GB spec machine?
No. OS X needs a minimum of 128. for that machine I would max it to 512. OS X will run decently.
If I am happy with it, I might plug in my 40GB internal IDE Western Digital
HDD which is supposed to be Mac compatible. Is it possible to do
this?
the 233 does not have Firewire, but you can put any HD internally (well, just about).
Can I dual boot in a Mac with Linux?
This was possible with PPCLinux and OS 8, but I don't know if it is possible in OS X. I doubt it. But why would you want to?
And do we use PC memory for the Mac, or does it have specific memory cards? I plan to take out by PC 133 128MB RAM and add it to the MAC.
The 233Mhz imac uses standard PC100 SO-DIMMS. 256MB max x2 modules means 512MB max memory. You can get sx256<B SO-DIMMs for under $100.
Lastly are there freeware/shareware for mac like textpad/notetab/winzip.
There's tons of free/shareware for the mac. www.macupdate.com and www.versiontracker.com are good starting places.
