I'm working on a relative's *very early* iMac (tray CD) trying to hook up a USB zip drive. The computer sees the drive (shows up in System Profiler just fine) but never mounts it, sends an error message that "The software needed to run this device is not installed". I've installed the drivers from the Iomega CD (more than once) but still no luck. Guest mode doesn't work either.

I recall hearing long ago that the early iMacs had problems with peripherals. Does anyone know any of the details of this problem? Has anyone tried to hook up those new USB keychain/flash/vault storage devices to any early iMac? (The main purpose of all this fuss is to provide a means for backing up critical files)

I have a Rev B and have both a Zip Drive and a 240 MB SuperDisk floppy drive working ok. I do have them connected to a powered hub so that may help. I'm also running System 9.1.
