The release of iTunes for Windows has left me a little confused. I don't use the iTMS (stuck with a 56k line), but I keep seeing reviews that mention that iTMS sells songs only in a proprietary format usable by only the iPod and iTunes.
That's utter crap, what they sell is AAC (MPEg-4 Audio) which is an industry standard, however iTunes/Quicktime 6 are the only software that plays AAC at the moment. People just like to whine about it because no-one else supports it. Quicktime is free, and so is iTunes, plus you can mix and match MP3s and AACs in iTunes seamlessly and transparently so I dunno where their gripe is. Add to that that itunes is flat-out the best MP3 player for windows BAR NONE and you realise they are just whining for the sake of it.

I thin kthe big sticker is that you have to license MPEG4 technology and it took Apple a long time to get a deal. Others are not will ing to hammer out such hard deals, which is why iTunes 4 on Windows makes sense - it has currently little competition in the advanced Audio CODEC department, but it also supports MP3.
I was under the impression that iTMS sells songs compressed with AAC, which is part of the MPEG-4 standard. Am I wrong?
