You're correct, but the windooze centric media likes the phrase "Proprietary Apple format". In fact it is part of MP4 developed by Dolby.

Well, for one thing the AAC song files you rip of a CD are standard mpeg-4 audio files and will play in iTunes, itunes Windows, Windows Media Palyer, Quicktime, and anything that will play mpeg-4.


That's not proprietary.
