First, I think that most of the world still DOES NOT have a computer. Second, saying that without Bill Gates most people wouldn't have computers is like saying that without Henry Ford most people wouldn't have cars. Both guys were pioneers, yes, but neither invented the car or the personal computer, they both just came up with very successful business models. I think this is a case where there's kind of a vacuum effect - if Gates or Ford hadn't existed, someone else would have moved into their space and done the same thing, or some of the smaller companies that they drove out of business would have evolved to be very like Microsoft or Ford. Maybe you've gone back in time and talked Bill Gates into being a potato farmers, and observed the effect on that alternate future, and that's why you can be so certain. In that case I'm sorry.
