I am confused and hope someone may be able to confirm whether the original 233 Mhz Rev/A Bondi Blue iMac, bought August 15, 1998 (the first day they went on sale), can make use of two 256 Meg SIMMs for a total of 512 Megs of RAM.

I recently put two 256 Meg SIMMs into a 333 Mhz Grape iMac. This would be slightly newer than my Bondi Blue, but both of them use the tray loading CD-ROM drive. When I search for RAM for iMacs, the only distinction I see on most web sites is between the tray loading early iMacs and the middle generation slot loading iMacs.

With my Bondi Blue iMac, I know that I can install two 128 Meg SIMMs for a total of 256 Megs of RAM. I have purchased several 256 Meg SIMMs from different folks on ebay. I had one bad experience where neither the Bondi Blue nor the 333 Mhz would read the matching 256 Meg SIMMs at all, but in all other cases I find that the Bondi Blue imac will make use of the 256 Meg SIMMs but will only recognize 128 Megs as available. So even though I have installed 512 Megs of RAM, the computer and Apple System Profiler only report a total of 256 Megs, which is what I had before I started all this work!!

Just wondering if I need to be more careful about the RAM I buy or whether the original Bondi Blue iMac is not capable of being upgraded to a full 512 Megs of RAM. I have not been able to find any confirmation on the web, except the ones which simply segregate the iMacs into slot loading versus tray loading.

By the way, the Grape 333 Mhz iMac really sings now that it has a fast internal hard drive, 512 Megs of RAM, and a Sonnet 600 Mhz Harmoni upgrade kit, complete with a Firewire port!!

I have a total of 512MB in my Bondi Blue. Your problem is obvious: you didn't buy QUALITY; but went for low cost. Stay away from ebay and go to a reputable RAM vendor such as Crucial (OEM supplier to Apple, IIRC) or Data Memory Systems. I've never had a problem with RAM from eith place.
