I have since put a 333 MOBO in it.
Hi John:
I think this may be the critical difference between your Rev/A iMac and mine. I say that simply because I have another iMac, a Grape coloured (pardon the Canadian spelling!) 333Mhz unit, which does recognize 256 Meg chips in both its upper and lower "slots", for a total of 512 Megs of RAM. Of course, that was with the original 333Mhz daughterboard. I have since upgraded that iMac using a Sonnet Harmoni kit which replaces that daughterboard with its own 600 Mhz unit, which also recognizes the full 512 Megs of RAM transferred from the 333 Mhz daughterboard.
In fact, now that I think about it, it occurs to me that I should try moving the 333 Mhz daughterboard I removed from the Grape iMac and put it into the Rev/A Bondi iMac and see if that change allows the Bondi unit to recognize the additional RAM. I rather expect the it won't, because the daughterboard that is currently in the Bondi iMac is also a Sonnet Harmoni upgrade item, just a 500 Mhz one rather than the later 600 Mhz kit.
Anyway, it looks like I still have some alternatives to try out. This particular Bondi Rev/A iMac motherboard is one where I also did some soldering to incorporate a connector for a high density diskette drive, which has never worked. Probably a cold solder joint or something like that. So I have another iMac Rev/A motherboard on order. I may get lucky and find that it will support two 256 Meg chips.
