I am a full time Apple Service Technician. I manage a Service Center. The charge of $150 is right on the mark for a data backup and diagnosis. Now at our shop if we do a data backup we do not *ever* back up the *whole* hard drive. We back up pertinent data. All applications as well as the operating system will have to be reinstalled. What we do is use a series of stable backup media such as external hard drives, burners, USB thumb drives, etc to get data off. If all else fails we take the HD our and slave it into a G4 we use for data backups and move the data that way. It is a technicians job to warn you about data loss and even to be sure that in the future you learn to do regular backups. He should also have told you that there is no guarantee with a data backup, and that you might not get anything back. The data might be bad, or the drive might fail during the backup process. Did they tell you any of that? But I totally agree with you. There should be no further charges than those agreed at the counter. Where did you take it? -- Kyle H.
