Ok, I have a stumper - at least for me...I took my second iMac to my in-laws and am now trying to hook them up to internet. I have the ISP, I have the phone plug, etc. I reinstalled the system and upgraded it back to 9.2.2 (I had run ethernet on it before and removed extra pieces). I can get it to dial and it times out and tells me the modem needs to be reset, isn't responding or doesn't have a valid phone line.

I did a test with tech tool and it said "no dial tone", but the phone, connected to the same cord when unplugged from the computer, works fine. So, apparently the modem is dead, undone, whatever. I had purchased this iMac on ebay several years ago and it has worked fine, but it may have been on ongoing situation, since I hadn't ever tried it out.

1) Is there such a thing as an USB Modem? Can I hook a serial external modem to this iMac and HOW???

2) How hard is it to find/replace an iMac modem? I have another iMac *I* use on ethernet...could I remove the modem from it and replace it in the other machine?

3) Any other ideas/choices? Other than TechTool, how can I test it?

Any help would be appreciated...I spent several hours last night getting the system all configured but no go.

Michele
