I didn't read all your responses, so I apologize if someone told you about this already...

I don't think there is anything wrong with your modem. Do you have a global village modem? If so, there is a control panel called Global Village or GlobalFax. It is there that you tell the computer WHICH PORT you are using to connect your device. Other manufacturers may have a similar control panel. RESET the modem there.
