I feel as if I am a bit of an expert at this, since I just got my new eMac this last December.
I burned a CD of each of the following PC files:

1. .txt .doc (these are my word processing files)
2. .bmp .jpg .gif .png .tif (these are my graphic files)
3. .htm (These are my internet files - I design web pages)
4. .ppt .xls .dbf (These are the rest of MS Office files)
5. Misc files (including some that are not Mac compatible, like MS Works, etc)

NONE of these files have failed to open on the eMac with either the built in viewers, Appleworks 6 or MS Office Mac.

If you don't have a CD burner on the PC, borrow one and put it on. This will save you a lot of time and effort.

1. Go to the Start button and click on FIND.
2. Enter *.txt (or whatever suffix you are saving)
3. When the list comes up, press CTRL-A to choose all.
4. Press CTRL-C to copy all
5.Open the CD Burner software
6. Go to the point where you choose what to burn
7. Click on CTRL-V to copy your list into the program
8. Burn the disk as an open session (so you can add more).
9. Start over using the next suffix

This method allows you to save all your PC data without clogging up your new hard drive with files you may or may not need. You can bring them over to the Mac as you need them.

I hope this helps you.

What would the best option be for transferring files from a PC to a new
iMac? My friend (PC user) is converting over to the mac this weekend. He is
out buying a new iMac and wants me to come over to transfer everything.

First thing to come to mind is a network. Would this be the best option or
should I tell him to buy a USB floppy for the iMac?
