When I bought my new 120 gig hard drive, (well, actually my Xmas gift from my wife) I first put OS 9 and X in the first 8 gig partition -- but it kept giving me a weird and dangerous sounding dialog box when I'd try to reboot into one from the other.

So I reformatted, putting 9 in the first 1.85 gigs and X into the next 6 gigs (to make certain X was in the first 8)...

I'm not up on the specific technicalities -- but I do know that I can reboot in either OS just fine now, with none but the usual dialog boxes. I'm not sharing my computer, so having certain users able to access only certain things isn't an issue with me.

The best resource I've found for checking compatibility, installing, and troubleshooting my tray-loader is xlr8yourmac.com -- I posted my little upgrade diary in one of the forums at http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso -- it has posts for all different types of Macs and hard drives.

Good luck!

Eddie

Does the 8gb hard drive limit for the first partition apply to Mac OS9 as well as Mac OSX? I had been under the belief that it only applied to X, but when I partitioned my tray loading iMac's 40 GB drive into 7.5 gb for the first partition and the rest of the hard drive for the second partition and then installed 10.3 on the first partition and 9 on the second partition, I'm dropped into firmware every time I try to boot into the 9 partition. The only way I can get out of it is to boot onto the Panther install disk and change the startup disk back to 10.3. OSX works just fine.
