Thanks Chas, I appreciate your help. I do have Quicktime Pro, but it
wouldn't play the DVD or the copy I made of it on my HD using MacTheRipper.
So far I haven't gotten my $30 worth.

I should have been clearer about this. The MPEG-2 component is an *additional* $30, not the same $30 that one pays for QT Pro. This is not Apple being greedy, btw -- it's a reflection of their cost to license MPEG-2.


  However, VLC is a sturdy app, and
after several fits and starts it played my movie, subtitles and all.

Great! There's another similar app called MPlayer OS X you might want to look at.
