AFAIK, you need to use the faxmodem in the iMac. It can't be done over the internet. I have never used it either but the way I have it figured is that the iMac just pretends to be a fax machine. You enter the telephone number of the fax machine you want to send to and the modem then calls it. It doesn't require a Dial-Up ISP, all you need to have a cable plugged into the phone socket.
