Thanks for your replies and suggestions. I went down to the store after reading all your comments and settled on the Epson Perfection 1670 which had been recommended by several people and had good reviews elsewhere.
The scans seem to be fairly good quality and the set up was pretty painless and hassle free. It helped that it was well within my price range too so I am hoping that it will suit my needs for at least another year or so.
The only thing that seems a bit dodgy about it is the film and slide scanner. That was the one item that seemed to cause a few of the reviews to be on the low side but since I do neither film or slide scanning, it shouldn't be a problem.
