Here's my question: How long should 8 Way Random Write Format take when erasing a 80 gb GB disk on a 17" 1ghz iMac?
Here's the narrative: My #1 iMac has died on me. I've tried a number of methods of resurrection, but it isn't coming back. I started when it started getting buggy with Safari, Mail & iChat. Here are the steps I followed: 1. Verify then repair permissions, restart. No help 2. Verify then repair disk, restart. No help 3. Archive and install, restart. No help 4. Killed off everyone's space, moved the .dmg files to my external HD, followed with a clean install using OS 10.3, did software update, restart. No help 5. Repeat step 4 (users already gone), don't do software update, restart. No help 6. Erase disk (no options selected), restart. Install using OS 10.3 disks, No help 7. Repeat step 6, add option of overwriting with 00000s, restart. Install using OS 10.3 disks, No help 8. Call Applecare, use hardware test disk, no problems, told to try one more install then surrender. 9. Overwriting disk before taking it to Compusa using 8 Way Random Write Format, because I had a lot of personal financial data, NOTHING improper! Remember through all these I was able to replicate the same buggy issues on those three programs. This just kind of got away from me, but I think it may be hardware. One more thing, I installed an Airport Extreme card last week... Should I have just taken it out before I went down this road?
