You indicate that you have a dot-Mac account, but that to date you and your husband have been using the same email address. I would suggest that the first step should be for whichever one of you is the actual "owner" of the dot-Mac account to logon to your account and set up a second dot-Mac email account for the other party. I believe you are allowed more than one email account.
If you find that additional email addresses under your dot-Mac account are an extra-cost item and you would prefer not to incur that expense, then the alternative would seem to be what another person suggested which is to find the America Online web site where you can apply for an AIM account which everyone seems to understand is available at no cost.
Now, once you have distinct dot-Mac or AIM accounts for your husband and yourself, you should be able to make iChat work. You may find that you have to type the account names in, and of course I think you have to be careful to tell iChat whether you are entering a dot-Mac or an AIM account name.
I'm not sure whether you need help in obtaining an AIM account. I don't have one, but I did a Goggle search for "AIM account" and the top result led me to

From that page, I clicked on the link at the top left corner which says "For Your Computer", where you select "Macintosh", which then took me to a page which is designed to allow you to download the Macintosh AIM software. You do NOT need to download the AIM software, but this page does have a button labeled "New Users Click Here" and that brings up a page which appears to allow you to request and register an AIM account name.
