In the address card - there is a line which lets you choose, home/work - and to the right is a drop down where AIM is the first.
I choose AIM and I entered in a name to the left.
My husband, on his Ibook entered me in as a buddy the same way. Is this where you entered the buddy name in?
We still don't see each other.

Both of these would be a solution to your problem.
I have both of my daughters sharing the same internet connection, but all of us have different AIM buddy names. We can link together on iChat, Yahoo Messenger and iVisit.
This is just one direction you could go.....
