What email application do you use? Many - I think most - have an offline mode, which lets you open a message without loading images (in Outlook Express, choose Work Offline from the File menu). Mail.app doesn't offer this, but you can disable automatic loading of images in the preferences.
I only mention it because disconnecting the cable is not always convenient, e.g. when a download is in progress.
