In the September issue of MacAddict or Macworld
magazine there were instructions for burning games or
programs from their DVD to a hard drive using Toast,
and then playing the game without the physical DVD in
the optical drive.

Would it be possible to accomplish the same trick with
a DVD of a movie? We are not interested in pirating
the movies! The goal is to allow a special needs
child to view the movies without having to physically
manipulate the disks.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, you can do this. If you mount a DVD as a disk in the finder, when opening it you will see a folder called VIDEO_TS. Copy that folder onto your hard drive. DVD Player (and VLC, btw) can play the contents of that folder.
