There are several Linux (Unix) programs that will trash most traces of a file, but if it's really a security issue why use some else's computer? For 95% or more of most normal circumstance secure delete will do the job. If I wanted to find the files though the first place I would really check is where the the tmp files were written too.

True - destroying the drive would certainly remove any possibility of retrieving the old data.
However, I am hoping that zeroing out the drive a couple of times, as a few people have suggested here - will pretty much eliminate any chance that my personal data could be retrieved.
That is the most I can realistically do as it is not my computer.
