And, yes, the quality has been stepped on. But that
has never stopped my niece from cranking her hip-hop
downloads at deafening volumes - and thoroughly
enjoying them. Serious audiophiles are not the target
market. The target is folk who want quick and easy
tunes that sound good over mass-market hardware. In a
nutshell, not everybody wants a Ferrari. The vast
majority of customers vote with their feet and their
dollars for Honda Accords and iTunes.
Autos vs Music. Ok. I'll go with that...
There are various makes/models of automobile, covering the whole
spectrum of quality. The manufacturers make it clear what's in what.
And the reviewers do their comparisons and such - to produce a
(cough) educated public that understands the diff between a Yugo, a
Honda, and a Mercedes.
There are various DRMs/Encodings of music tracks permitted by the
RIAA, espoused by the likes of Apple et al. Some are better quality
than others, none are high quality. There is no effort to make clear
what's what. There are no reviewers comparing them (in many cases
the licensors prohibit publishing results). And so the lemmings buy
the cyber equiv of a Yugo, thinking they got a good deal.
Now, Apple is supposed to be known for making higher quality
products. But they have these cruddy tracks for sale?! Shouldn't we
expect better from Apple?
ps. My condolences for your niece. Perhaps it's not too late tho?
My housemate's son was also falling down that path. I'm happy to
say, he has now seen the light!!!! I exposed him to a vinyl of "Dark
Side Of The Moon" and "Aqualung". He's now branched out into
classical and alternative.
*shudder* hip-hop
If person X is willing to embrace
the step down from vinyl to CD, then by what license
does that person cast aspersions upon the sound
quality of internet downloads?
Some of us simply cannot strive for mediocrity.
That's why we Think Different.
