Probably true for most major label stuff.
Amazon offers a bunch of free stuff in their music downloads. Some
quite good.
Tim brings up a good clarification to my original post.
Quite a few sites offer legal, unrestricted FREE mp3s from either
unsigned bands or as some kind of occasional "premium." The iTunes
Music Store does this as well.
Let's just say these are generally NOT the big hit singles (to put it
mildly -- most are utter crap) but they ARE completely free,
unrestricted and legal. Many unknown bands also make legal MP3s of
their stuff available too.
Obviously this is not part of the "big five, mainstream" service
overview I was talking about in my earlier post. These are little
"samplers" intended to get you to buy protected music files from
whichever company is offering them, or they are a genuine gift from
an obscure/unknown band hoping for wider acceptance.
