In a reasonably quiet computer... yes. If you listen, you will probably 
be able to hear the drive. Depending on drive model it may be fairly loud 
(and others may be almost silent).

It is not unusual for a drive to get louder as it gets older. The 
bearings in the motor wear out and start to rub. Unless you are hearing a 
very loud scratching or metal scraping noise, I wouldn't worry too much 
about it.

If you are concerned, just make sure you keep your backups up to date.
