Seagate has by far the best rep for dependability. (That's the other one, Lite-On makes optical drives, DVD, CDRW, etc) Seagates are very quiet also.
Maxtor has built a rep on cheap reliable drives. Apple uses a lot of Maxtors. Maxtor is a solid choice and usually the same price as a Seagate. I have no issues buying one. Western Digital has literally been up and down. Their Caviar series of drives were some of the worst drives ever made. They do however make the fastest SATA drive out right now. IBM now Hitachi has taken over the notebook market. IBM used to make pretty crappy drives. Lol Hitachi is, at least in the retail market the only manufacturer to produce 7200rpm notebook drives. I believe Seagate may have just built some but I am not 100% sure and they are not available retail. Anyway it's a lot of opinion and experience. There are those that say Western Digital is the best, there are those that think IBM drives were good. I personally worked in a repair shop for 5 years and still repair comps on the side and have seen my share of drives. I'd have to say Seagate is by far the best. >MindaugasUS< ::www.mindaugas.us:: ::www.gearhost.com:: Possibly written on >> | PM G3 400MHz | 640MB | 146GB u160 | ATTO UL2D | Liteon DVD+CDRW Combo | Zip 100 | ATI Rage 128 | OS 10.2 | -----Original Message----- From: iMac List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Sean Brackeen Sent: Tuesday, June 14, 2005 9:04 PM To: iMac List Subject: Hard Drives I just have a few questions now we are on the subject. 1. What is better Maxtor, Western Digital, or LITE-On I think it is? 2. I own a FireLite 40 GB FireWire drive that I use with OSX Panther and with OS9 only at work. I also own a 20 GB one but the 40 GB drive seems to be having problems, Whenever I hook the drive to the OSX machine it won't mount at all. On the OS9 it takes a while and a reboot but will mount. I use a PowerBook for OSX and a Graphite iMac slot loader. I don't use the drive at home on my eMac is stays at work locked up with my PowerBook And Gateway charged me 80.00 for a 20 GB Western Digital HD -Sean -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
