Charles, since you're using lots of WD drives, I was curious if you
have experienced the same high failure rate that I've seen among
clients and friends with WD drives?
Well, I don't know if four across two computers counts as "lots," but ..
No, I'm not seeing a high failure rate. Of the four, one has
failed ... and that was because a shelf collapsed and knocked over
the drive (which was in an external case) WHILE WRITING.
Any other drive would have reacted the same way, methinks.
I've often wondered why different people have such seemingly
different tales to tell about most drive manufacturers, and I've
developed a pet theory: low-cost parts.
All the drive manufacturers are in a race with each other to sell
more drives, thus creating pressure to lower the cost. Eventually,
someone blinks and uses some substandard parts, which leads to them
taking the lead in sales for a while but ultimately coming back to
bite them. The others then follow suit, but eventually the problems
outweigh the savings and they go back to using better-quality parts.
So, IOW, drive makers go in "cycles" of good or less-good quality. At
the moment, Seagate seems to be reaping the benefit of being
perceived as the "best" -- but I remember back when Apple used them
as the main supplier of 1 and 2 GB drives and customers HATED em.
I've seen enough that I
personally don't ever buy WD anymore.
Well, to be fair, I only buy the "Special Edition"/Caviar models,
which have more cache and generally seem to be their "premium" line.
That may enhance my "luck" with these drives.
