Subject: how to clean up and upgrade to OS X
Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 21:29:29 +0000

Hello,
I've recently scored a free blue 500 MHz iMac 2001, with 128 MB Ram and Airport currently running 9.2 that I'd like to wipe clean and install OS X on. I'm not a super-geek with computers tho, so I need some help. I'm not sure how to wipe clean a Mac, do I just do a clean install of 9.2? Does that get rid of all older files/documents? Should I back things up? Will a clean install tweak the Airport feature (a bonus find that I'd like to use)? Also, any tips/suggestions about installing OS X on the iMac? Can it handle it? I got a bundle of Apple software w/ the computer, including system recovery disks and 9.0 and OS X disks. Is it safe to assume that the computer can handle OS X? If so, why would the previous users not loaded it?

I am in digest mode and have read six answers so far. Let me add, rather stress, that with your OS 9 applications in hand, if you want to use them, you need to install both OS 9 and OS X. Since you are new to OS X, do not waste your time with the older versions 10.1 or 10.2, if that is what you have. I agree with the person who said to use Panther 10.3 or Tiger 10.4 and update those to the latest versions available, i.e. 10.3.9 or 10.4.2.

Look up lowendmac.com web site specs for more info about your machine. I suspect you have an original 20GB hard drive. That is enough drive space, maybe 18 or 19 GB total. And if you allow sufficient elbow room for OS X to work and to load applications, be careful not to exceed 15 GB with your OSs, software, and data. If your space requirements grow to exceed that safe limit, you can add an external firewire hard drive.

If you want to wipe clean and install with the OS X CDs first, make sure you opt for installing the OS 9 Drivers. That will allow you to install OS 9 later. If you install OS 9 first, go all the way to OS 9.2.2 to be best ready for OS X. With OS X running and OS 9.2.2 installed, you can configure it for Classic, meaning that you can run most, if not all, your OS 9 applications, while having started up (booted) in OS X.

Someone said to wipe clean your drive by using Disk Utility in OS X. True. You can also do it with your OS 9 CD. Look for Drive Setup. But go ahead and read and maybe take notes on some things at the top of the first window you see from the CD, like: Before You Install, Late Breaking News, and Install Mac OS 9.2.pdf. Use the CD Finder's and Drive Setup's Help functions and your notes along the way for details. With your small hard drive, I would forego partitioning.

Good Luck, and have fun,

Al Poulin
